Mrs. Kerttu Annikki Jakola, age 88 years, passed away peacefully in Pinewood Court on Friday, August 25, 2017 after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's Disease.

Kerttu was born in Sievi, Finland on November 9, 1928 to Heino and Ida Kylma. She met and married Niilo Jakola and they started their life and family together. They immigrated to Canada in 1957 with three of their children. Kerttu worked as a Nurses' Aid at various institutions including Westmount, Port Arthur General Hospital, LPH, and Amethyst House. She was a hardworking, independent woman and truly loved caring for her patients. She was especially proud to have met Terry Fox's parents.

Kerttu enjoyed fishing, going to camp, blueberry picking, the sauna, gardening, flowers and nature. She loved time spent with family and being able to make meals for them all. She was famous for her coffee bread and finn pancakes. Kerttu also had a passion for music and was blessed with a wonderful singing voice. She was happy, gentle woman and a loving wife, mother, grandma and friend. She taught everyone something and will be deeply missed by all.

Kerttu is survived by her children Eric (Linda) Jakola, Helena (George) Laidler, Raili Jakola and Marlene Lewis; grandchildren Leila (Dave) Maunder, Nadeline (Jay) Trelinski, Connie Pucci, Kevin (Suzie) Laidler, Andrew (Meghan) Lewis, Adam Lewis, Marty Peck and Alex Peck as well as her great-grandchildren Tennisen and Cole Maunder, Jordan and Alexia Pucci, Faith and Lena Trelinski and Lyla Lewis. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Niilo Emil; parents Ida (nee Vahosalo) and Heino Kylma and brother Sulo as well as two others in infancy; granddaughter Erika Jakola and son-in-law Danny Lewis.

The family would like to thank the staff of Pinewood Court for all of the care and comfort provided to Mom during her time there.

Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Kerttu Jakola will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 1:00pm in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Kerttu to the Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
