Obituary for Miss. Robyn Alexia Chikane

Remembering Robyn

The family of Robyn Alexia Chikane are heartbroken to announce her sudden passing on Sunday, December 18, 2022.

Robyn was born in Thunder Bay on February 26, 2000 to her late father Robert Chikane; and mother Iris Strang. Robyn, along with her younger sister, Noelle were deeply loved and cared for by Robert until his sudden passing. The sisters were then lovingly raised by their uncles; Samuel (Madeline) Chikane and Gerald (Judy) Chikane.
Robyn was a sweet and quiet young lady, she was friendly and always quick with a smile. Although she may have seemed shy, those that knew her, knew how much she loved laughing, teasing and just having a good time.

Robyn touched the hearts of everyone she met. She held a silent power within and when she spoke, everyone listened. Robyn was a role model, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it and showed willingness to get involved in new sports or activities in her high school days. She became leader of the art club, taking many new students under her wing and helping them to learn spray painting skills which she had spent years honing to perfection.

Robyn Chikane was the artist behind one of the banners for the Massey Lectures, her self portrait entitled Graffiti Style. The banners were displayed on stage for every single lecture across Canada. In Ottawa, Robyn had the honor of presenting one of her paintings to then, Indigenous Services of Canada Minister, Jane Philpott.

Memories of Robyn will live on through her art and in the people she shared her love of art with. Pieces of her can be seen in her many murals, drawings and paintings in Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, private homes and around the community.

Robyn leaves behind her beloved one and only son; Jaxxon; many siblings, numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and other extended family.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 2, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street, Thunder Bay. A short service will be held beginning at 2:00pm, officiated by Pastor Colin Kanate. Robyn will then be transported home to Weagamow Lake First Nation, where a Funeral Service will take place in Weagamow Lake Evangelical Church on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 1:00pm, officiated by Pastor Jerry Quequish. The interment will follow in the Community Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Jake Sawanis.

The family gracefully declines flowers, but donations made to Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School (DFC) in Robyn's name would be greatly appreciated.
