Obituary for Mr. Carl Leonard (Chinood) Beardy

CARL “LEONARD” BEARDY
October 5, 1965 – December 10, 2022

Mr. Carl “Leonard” Beardy, age 57 years, passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, December 10, 2022.

Chinood, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario on October 5, 1965 to Emesiah and Lucy Beardy. He was a hardworker and dedicated to his many jobs over the years, most notably as a Band Councillor. He helped many of his family and friends, and the community as a whole, with projects such as getting running water and starting the airline, Nuhmay Koos Air, amongst many others. Chinood was an entrepreneur and started a small store with his friends many years ago. The store continued to grow to the large family store it is today and became an integral part of Big Trout Lake First Nation, especially during the COVID battles. Chinood was very curious and adventurous. He really liked to keep busy with anything he could, even learning to carve Moose antlers. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and being on the boat fishing. He also was proud to have started the community canoe trips to Fort Severn back in the 1980's, an annual tradition that continues today. Chinood also enjoyed hockey and was a member of the Native Wings hockey team. He was a prankster and had a big heart, helping anyone he could. He was most passionate about his family and will be so missed by all.

Chinood is survived by his children Andrew, Samson (Macayla), Seth (Jaydie), Judas (Miranda) and Christal, as well as his many grandchildren; siblings Lillian (David), Mae, John and Sarah; sisters-in-law Lucy and Peggy and brother-in-law James. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends also survive.

He was predeceased by his mother Lucy (nee Morris) and father Emesiah Beardy; siblings Larry, Deborah, Donald and Brent; sister-in-law Betty and brother-in-law Roddy.

A Wake Service will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022 from 3:00pm until 5:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay. Carl will then be transported to Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, where a Wake Service will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. Final services will be held in Big Trout Lake First Nation at St. Peter's Anglican Church on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 1:00pm with burial to follow in the Community Cemetery.
