Obituary for Mr. Peter Robert Humeniuk

PETER HUMENIUK
August 5, 1941 – October 7, 2022

The family of Mr. Peter Robert Humeniuk, aged 81 years, sadly announce that he unexpectedly passed away in his home on Friday, October 7, 2022.

Born in Fort William on August 5, 1941, Peter graduated from Fort William Collegiate and went on to play football for the Fort William Redskins. He then pursued his passion for art, attending the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. That led to working as the Art Director – Woodlands Division for Hawker-Siddeley/Can-Car in the marketing of the Tree Farmer skidder. Peter’s art was featured on the cover of the Lakehead Telephone Book in 1968, as well as on a commemorative coin for the newly amalgamated City of Thunder Bay in 1970.

With ever the entrepreneurial spirit, Peter later owned and operated several businesses, including partnering with life-long friend Mike Wiktowy to form Industrial Coatings. Peter went on to a long career in industrial sales and subsequently started PDM Protective Coatings. However, art was always Peter’s passion and, later in life, he was finally able to make it his focus. It kicked off with a commission to produce over 200 original watercolour paintings for the opening of the Nor-Wester Hotel. This led to the launch of his Brodie Street Art Gallery and a successful second career teaching his “big brush” painting technique at numerous workshops across Canada and the United States. Peter was also selected as the Artist in Residence for Quetico Provincial Park in 2008 and spent many summers in Grand Marais, MN painting outdoors in his gazebo at the 8 Broadway Art Gallery.

Peter loved the water and spending time with his two sons boating and fishing – especially in his beloved 1965 Boston Whaler rigged for salmon fishing. He enjoyed memorable fishing trips to the NW Territories for arctic char and to Washington Island, Wisconsin for salmon. Peter always loved dogs – especially the family Labrador Retrievers that he proudly trained with the dog club in the 70’s for duck hunting. He was a diehard Minnesota Vikings and was born a NY Yankees fan but loved his Toronto Blue Jays more and watched every game.

Peter is survived by his sons, Michael (Paola) and David (Colleen); and their mother Gordie Garriock; grandchildren Lindsay, Jordan, and Kyler; siblings Marilyn (Lorne) Caruso and Donna (Ian) Robinson, along with, a niece, nephews and cousins.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Dorothy Humeniuk, and nephew Brian Caruso.

A Celebration of Peter’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, with time and location to follow. A private interment will take place in Mountainview Cemetery, where Peter will be laid to rest with his parents.
