Obituary for Mrs. Tuulikki Saara Mannisto

It is with great heartfelt sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our loving mother and mummu, Saara Tuulikki Mannisto, who passed away peacefully at Pioneer Ridge in Thunder Bay on September 23, 2022.

Tuulikki was born in Isojoki Finland on July 25, 1939. After meeting the love of her life Eero, she moved to Canada in 1961 to join him and worked at the historic Hoito Restaurant. They got married and a few years later their first son Henry was born, followed by Michael. Tuulikki was always there for her family as her number one priority.

Tuulikki always had a loving and friendly style full of happiness and laughter. This was evident in everything she did, whether it was her hobbies and interests and very importantly spending time with her family and friends.

During the summers, Tuulikki and Eero would spend their time at their camp at Island Lake, and always treasured visits from friends and family. Tuulikki would always make sure that nobody ever went home hungry and in fact had one of their best meals. She loved spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking and those unique treasures she created will never be forgotten. She also loved her gardens, flowers and animals, especially chipmunks, squirrels, loons and other different types of birds.

She also enjoyed reading, music and singing, having been a member of the Oras Ladies Choir, traveling to various locations to perform.

Tuulikki very much enjoyed spending time with and traveling with her best friend and husband Eero, who she was married to for 60 years. They enjoyed vacationing in Florida for many decades where they treasured spending time with old friends and making new friends from various parts of the world.

Tuulikki also looked for every opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren, Jayden and Kayla. Even though they were born and lived in Grand Cayman, she was able to develop a special bond with them through frequent visits spending quality time together and through FaceTime. She treasured every minute she was able to spend with them, creating many lifelong happy memories, by having fun together and sharing lots of great stories and laughs.

Tuulikki always showed strength and perseverance “sisu” in life and never more so than after she suffered a serious stroke several years ago. She never complained, was always happy and kind to those around her, and did what she was able to do to help herself and others right to the end. She was a real inspiration to her family and friends and will be hugely missed.

Tuulikki will be forever lovingly remembered by her sons, Henry and Michael (Wendy), and her grandchildren Jayden and Kayla. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives in Thunder Bay, Finland, the United States and New Zealand.

She was predeceased by her brother Tapani and her parents.

The family would like to sincerely thank the amazing staff at Pioneer Ridge and St. Joseph’s Care Group who took great care of her during her time there.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a private funeral and celebration of life with her close family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.

Should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Tuulikki to Hilldale Lutheran Church, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
