Obituary for Mrs. Signe Victoria Ranta (Berglund)

SIGNE RANTA

Signe Victoria Ranta (née Berglund), of Thunder Bay died peacefully after a full life of 93 years, on September 20, 2022. She was predeceased by her parents and six siblings including her twin Ruth, husband Elmer, son Paul, daughters Jennifer and Janice and daughter in law Joan. Signe is survived by her children Raymond, Allan (Debbie), David (Margot) and Eric (Linda); grandchildren Andrew (Kristie), Neil (Dani), Jennalyn (Adam), Janeen, Jaron (Ryan), Rianne (Thane), Monica, Colin, Malcolm, Matti (Sharon) and Lissi, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Signe was born December 8, 1928 in the kitchen of the the family farm in Finnmark that was heated by a woodfired kitchen stove. Growing up she attended the one room schoolhouse in Flett finishing in grade 8. While she had many challenges in her life, she always persevered.

Many will remember Signe as, the Mail Lady of RR13, or have been the recipient of her knitting. A great grandchild was the last to receive a knitted baby blanket last year. She went back to school at age 74 to Lakehead University and received her Bachelor of Arts degree. She was also seen regularly at the Scandinavian Restaurant with friends and family eating or doing the Scand Board Business. As well she was a regular driving around Fort William delivering Meals on Wheels lunches for many years. If you drove past her house at Christmas time you would have seen her window painted by her grandchildren.

Signe loved her camp at Dog Lake and wrote in her daily journal about lake life. She paddled often on the lake and built her own cedar strip canoe and took it on a six day canoe trip. She enjoyed being able to host friends and family at the lake and introduce them to the sauna and water skiing.

She has been cremated and will be buried alongside her husband Elmer at a private family ceremony. There will not be a funeral service.
Signe has requested that instead of flowers, donations to the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra be made. An organization that has held a special place in her heart for many years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
