Obituary for Mrs. Valma Sylvia Harmatiuk (Dzuba)

Mrs. Valma Harmatiuk (nee Dzuba), age 87 years, passed away peacefully at home in Red Rock on Thursday, June 2, 2022.

Valma was born in Port Arthur on May 11, 1935. Her parents, Sylvia (nee Matson) and Nick Dzuba moved to West Loon Lake where her family owned and operated Dzuba Amethyst Mine and Rock Stand. She met Steve Harmatiuk and they married on December 8, 1962. Together they raised their children, Joe and Susan in Red Rock.

Valma was a loving and devoted mother and was the quiet heart of a happy household. She very much enjoyed watching “Days of Our Lives” together with Susan. Valma and Steve were always puttering. They spent time gardening and turning those vegetables into pickles, making extra jars of Joe’s favourite mustard pickles for him to take home to Toronto. They cared for many cats over the years. She loved spending time in her yard, identifying the various birds which visited and making sure the hummingbirds were fed. In recent years, she loved using her iPad to play Bejeweled, to check her lottery numbers and talk to Joe & Kara on Skype.

She is survived and will be missed by her son, Joe and daughter-in-law Kara Isert; sisters in-law Jannice Dzuba and Pauline Harmatiuk; brother in-law Pete Harmatiuk; all her nieces and nephews, and her cat, Foxy. Her life long friends from West Loon and newer friends from Red Rock will also feel her loss.

Valma was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Steve and their daughter, Susan; her parents, her brother Phil Dzuba, brother-in-law, Albert and her sister in-law Joan Harmatiuk.

Joe and Kara extend their thanks to the kind and generous people of Red Rock and Nipigon who have made Valma’s life easier and more enjoyable over the past two difficult years.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on the evening of Thursday, June 9, 2022 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street, Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Interment will be held at 11:00am on Friday, June 10, 2022 in Cliffside Cemetery, Nipigon. Valma's Celebration of Life will follow from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at The Red Rock Inn, Red Rock, Ontario.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to Nipigon Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice.
