Obituary for Mr. Robert "Bob" Airth Hilliard

Bob (Robert Airth) Hilliard
August 4, 1928 – March 15, 2022

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, at the age of 93, on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. He passed peacefully after a brief stay at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where we were able to be with him to provide love and support over the days.

Dad will be sadly missed by his children; Dale (Cathy), Fred (Gail), Roberta (Lawrence Taylor), Marion. Grandchildren; Michael Hilliard (Jeanine), Kevin Taylor (Valentina), Jill Taylor (Danielle), Kristy Hilliard (great grand-daughter Robyn Pochailo), Kelly Hilliard (Chris). Survived by sisters-in- law; Joan Hilliard and Elizabeth Villeneuve, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

He was predeceased by devoted wife Ida (Tergie), his parents Thomas and Reta Hilliard (nee Plaunt), Brother Howard (of Renfrew), sister Marion Shields (of Picton). Father and Mother-in-law William and Anna Tergie (Hurkett), Brothers- in-law Homer Shields, George Tergie, Andre Audet, Steve Villeneuve, Walter Jackson, William Collin. Sisters-in-law Celia Collin and Gram Audet. Dad was also fortunate enough to find love and companionship with his second wife Georgette Pineau who predeceased him.

Dad was born in Simcoe, Ontario on August 4, 1928, and was raised in Renfrew, Ontario with his siblings Howard and Marion. His father was a logger and Dad worked with him as a young boy throughout the Valley. He ventured out on his own for a lifelong career of almost 40 years with Ontario Hydro. While working in Le Cave, a pretty waitress, Ida (Tergie) caught Bob’s eye and he hers. This was the start of Bob and Ida. Soon after on February 24, 1951 they were married and began their family while moving throughout Southern, Northern and Northwestern Ontario.

Dad was a dedicated family man. He taught us all to ride a bike, skate, swim, fish, hunt, even use a two handled saw…. all of which we enjoyed, especially at Norway Lake and Cameron Falls. He taught us all the value of hard work, being caring and respecting others. We have so many fond memories to keep in our hearts and to share.

We are so amazed by our Dad. To us he was 93 years young. He lived independently in his condo and would often just hop in his car to drop in for a visit or maybe just to grab a dinner of liver and onions. He was an avid reader, sharp minded, organized and a no-nonsense kind of guy. Dad was kind, witty and inquisitive. We never heard him complain or say a bad thing about anyone or anything. He loved his family and spending time with us while enjoying meals, and a few drinks, a game of cards, family birthdays and holidays. He always expressed a sincere interest in everyone while taking the time to have a conversation. Young and old, family or anyone he came across was greeted with a genuine smile on his face.

When saying goodbye, he would say “Be good” and he meant be a good person. When asked how he was, he would say “Everything is fine” and that meant that he is OK. Now that he is gone, we know that he will watch over us. Everything will be fine and we will be good Dad.

A private family service will held in the Everest – WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street on Thursday, March 24th, 2022 followed by interment at Riverside Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest beside his loving wife Ida.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory to Diabetes Canada would be greatly appreciated.
