Obituary for Mrs. Maila Helen Elanora Niemi

It is with great sadness that the family of Maila Niemi announce her unexpected passing on March 15, 2022. Mom wrote her own obituary after her husband’s passing….

Oh crap, I guess I’m dead. My clock ran out.

I was born in Port Arthur, the only child to parents Vaino and Lily Muotio on Dec. 17, 1944, one week before Christmas, which really reeked.

I went to Algonquin Ave School and Hillcrest High School. Upon graduation I got my dream job in the Accounting Dept. at Ontario Hydro. I married by best friend Melvin Niemi on May 16, 1964 and worked until 1970 when I became a stay at home mom. We built our home on Junot Ave and lived there for 53 years, finally moving into a condo in 2019.

When the kids were little we loved to go camping in our trailer to local lakes in the summer and snowmobiling and ice fishing with the Harkonen family in the winter. We made several trips with the trailer to the West Coast and one very memorable trip with Wilbert and Selma to Newfoundland. In later years we spent time at the camp on One Island Lake, where we should have spent more time.
I wasn’t crazy about cooking, but you have to eat. I tolerated cleaning because I wanted a neat, clean house. Laundry was my thing hanging the clothes just so on the line. I loved to read until I couldn’t see anymore.

I loved my grandkids each in their own special way, carefree Samantha, don’t mess with me Chloe, all around athlete Jordan and detail oriented artist Riley.

I am survived by my wonderful children, son Ken (Lisa) Niemi, grandkids Samantha and Chloe in The Pas, Manitoba, daughter Lynn (Sid) Lem, grandchildren Jordan and Riley, Sister-in-law Marlene Monty, cousins Irene (Larry) Michaud and Ron Koivu and numerous relatives in Finland.
I was predeceased by my husband Melvin, parents and in-laws.

I lived a good life with no regrets.

As per my wishes there will be no service or celebration of life. Cremation has taken place and I will be interred with my husband at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, Underground Gym or charity of your choice.
