Obituary for Mrs. Orlean Gay Luski (McGiffin)

GAY LUSKI
(nee McGiffin)
January 4, 1934 – January 24, 2022

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our precious Mum and Grandma/Baba, Orlean Gay Luski, on Monday, January 24, 2022 in Pioneer Ridge Long Term Care Facility, with her loving daughter Beryl by her side.

Gay was born in Ashern, Manitoba on January 4, 1934. Growing up in Ashern, she spent her younger years with her “long-time chum” of 88 years, Fae Frohwerk. Many summers were enjoyed at Berens River, Manitoba, with her Uncle, Aunt and cousins. Later years were joyfully spent babysitting from West to East for her siblings. Settling in Thunder Bay, she met the love of her life, Ed Luski.

Mum lived a great life filled with lots of family memories and was the heart of the family. She spent 55 years living on E. Amelia Street, where she always had a place at the table for you and a piece of her heart to share. Mum was particularly close to her grandchildren and would do anything for them.

Mum had a survivor's spirit, which served her well, as for three decades she sailed through a list of medical conditions to which most people would have succumbed. In the end it was renal failure that took her life. She never gave up or gave in, but she knew where she was headed and she put her faith in God to bring her home to Him, at age 88.

Gay will be lovingly remembered by her two children, Beryl Luski (Chris), and Ed Luski (Sherry); grandchildren Natacha (Cameron), EJ (Catherine), Courtney (Jesse), Kam (Karli), Alex, Destinee (James) and great-grandchild Henry; brother-in-law Mike Luski, sister-in-law Ann Cherepa and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly. She will also be missed by her devoted baby, Stacy (Pomeranian).

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward Luski; her parents “Jackie” McGiffin (nee Whiteway) and O.B. McGiffin; her sister Joy Morgan-Smith (Bill) and brothers Orbey (Connie), Orval (Diana) and Bob (Jan).

Gay was devoted to her family. She was a stay at home wife and Mom, whom also loved babysitting. Mum loved reading, knitting, visiting Manitoba, sharing all of the old-time family stories, and camping trips with Dad, especially the off-roading fishing excursions with cousin, Gert.

Special thanks to St. Elizabeth Health Care who provided Mum with outstanding nursing and home care for the past 20 years. Thank you to all the wonderful health care providers and all the staff at Pioneer Ridge for their care and compassion for the past 3 months. We truly appreciate with sincere gratitude all the health care services provided for Mum throughout the years.

Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Gay Luski will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022 with family and friends gathering in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 2:00pm, celebrated by Father James Panikulam. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:30pm. A video recording of the Vigil Prayers and Mass will be available on the Everest of Thunder Bay website beginning on Saturday.

As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, COVID protocols are still being applied in group settings. Capacity is limited to allow for social distancing, a record of attendance must be maintained and wearing of masks or face coverings by everyone is required for those attending the services.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Gay to the Thunder Bay Renal Clinic (payable to TBRHSF) would be greatly appreciated.

Whether on the phone or in person, Mum always left by saying,
“Love you. God bless you. So long for now.”
