Obituary for Mrs. Ruth Giba (Manty)

RUTH GIBA

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our cherished wife and mother, Ruth Giba on December 21, 2021 at the age of 84.

Ruth was born on March 22, 1937. She grew up in South Gillies with her father, her grandmother, and her four siblings, Laura, Frances, Carl (Bud) and Eric. She attended elementary school in South Gillies, secondary school at Fort William Collegiate, and graduated from King’s Business College.

Ruth worked for many years as a Ward Secretary at McKellar Hospital before joining her husband, Walter, in becoming entrepreneurs in their retirement. Together they built and operated Last Resort, next to their retirement residence at Whitefish Lake. Many fun times were enjoyed by family and friends at the lake, and those memories will stay with us forever. Ruth was a very social person and enjoyed sharing coffee and conversation with the seasonal campers at the resort, as well as American guests who returned year after year. She became friends with and stayed in touch with many.

After retiring for the second time, they moved back to Thunder Bay and settled into one of the houses Mom had her eye on as her dream home when she and Walter first married. Walter had promised her that he would one day buy her that dream home, and he kept his promise to her. Such was the love they shared for over 66 years.

Ruth had the biggest heart. She was kind, caring, generous, thoughtful and loving, always putting the needs of others before herself.

She instilled in her children the importance of morals, ethics, hard work, and most of all, strong family bonds. She loved gardening, and raising chickens, but her greatest love was being able to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 66+ years, Walter, children Darlene (Gary), Debra, Dan (Barb), David; grandchildren Kelly Boyce (Nancy), Bryson Giba, Kirstin Banaga (Rommel); great grandchildren Zachary Boyce, Taryn Boyce, Asher Banaga; brother Carl (Bud) Manty (Hester), as well as nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by parents Eino and Caroline Manty, sisters Laura Falden and Frances Kivinen, brother Eric Manty.

The family would like to thank the kind and caring nurses in Emerg, 2B and ICU at TBRHSC, especially nurses Emily and Lauren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be made through Simpler Times.

Should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Options Northwest or to a charity of their choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
