Obituary for Mrs. Maria do Carmo Pacheco (Carvalho)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Maria do Carmo Pacheco on Saturday, May 29th, 2021. Maria was born in Bretanha, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal on January 28th, 1940. Seeking a better life, Maria immigrated to Canada with her husband and three daughters in 1972. She owned and operated Russell Tailors with her two daughters Anna and Natalia for over 35 years, and most recently retired and closed her shop in June 2018.
Maria was a member of the Portuguese Association of Thunder Bay for several years. She loved to volunteer her time with the other “ladies in the kitchen” prepping and making traditional Portuguese food and desserts. In addition, she thoroughly loved gardening, tending to her flowers, going for walks in her neighbourhood, and talking to all of her neighbours. Maria was a long time dedicated member of St. Anthony’s Parish and had a strong faith in God.
Maria adored spending time with her family. She was very charitable and generous, always cooking and baking for her loved ones and friends. Her greatest joy was having everyone together at her house for large family dinners. When you think of Maria, you imagine a strong, kind-hearted, patient, loving, selfless, hard working, active, humble and graceful eighty-one year old woman. She was so proud to be independently living in her home and still driving her one and only 1994 Nissan Sentra car before her unexpected passing.
She is predeceased by her loving husband of fifty years, Francisco Pacheco; her parents Manuel Pimentel Carvalho and Maria do Carmo Pimentel,; father and mother-in-law Francisco and Beatriz Pacheco; and son-in-law Bill Horde Jr.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Anna (Jaime) Arruda, Natalia (Jose) Furtado, and Isabel Pacheco (Patrick S.); grandchildren, Jeffrey (Maria-Teresa), Elizabeth (Lance), Michael (Natasha), Ryan, Abby, and Ava; great granddaughter, Avery; sisters, Ilda Freitas (Abilio) and Margarida Batista, and numerous sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Family would like to thank the TBRHSC staff in the ER, 2B and 2C departments for their compassion prior to and during her passing.
Due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, a private family service will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 in EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. Interment will follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery. A video recording will be available on the Everest of Thunder Bay website beginning on Saturday morning. Visitation for friends and family will be available on Thursday, June 3, 2021 between 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Anyone wishing to attend is required to register for a time slot by calling the funeral home at 344-1121.
As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the attendance at each visitation is restricted to 10 people or less and a record of attendance must be maintained. Wearing of masks or face coverings by everyone and maintaining social distancing of 6 feet is mandatory for those attending.
