Obituary for Mrs. Arlene Mildred Hardick (Oliver)

ARLENE MILDRED HARDICK
June 10, 1935 – March 20, 2021

Mrs. Arlene Mildred Hardick (nee Oliver), age 85 years, went home peacefully on Saturday, March 20, 2021, after a brief illness, with her loving family and caring staff by her side in St. Joseph's Hospital.

Arlene was born on June 10, 1935 at McKellar Hospital in Fort William, the first child to Olivia and James Oliver. She attended local schools and worked for 21 years as an Occupational Therapy Aide at Hogarth-Westmount Hospital, retiring in 1997. Arlene met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Charles Hardick and they were married on June 13, 1953.

Arlene's greatest passion was her family and visits with all of her children and grandchildren were always special. She also had a large church family, spending over 59 years at Knox United Church – Pruden Street and then as a member at First Wesley United Church. She served in many capacities within the church, including Sunday School, membership, worship and President of United Church Woman, of which she was a lifelong member. When she joined First Wesley in 2015, Arlene served as a member of the Pastoral Care Committee. She also volunteered at West Thunder Community Centre for several years.

She was a cheerful, loving and kind woman, and will be deeply missed by all of those who knew her.

Arlene is survived by her children Daniel (Lori), Betty Ann (Brent) Sutherland, David (Janis), Susan Shuplak, Margaret (Thomas) Paglaro and Alison (Rankin) MacDonald of Sooke, BC; grandchildren Ashley, Carly (Ron Frost), Chelsey (Jen Scott), Evan (Carolyn) Sutherland of New Zealand and Cory Sutherland (Brittany Kavcar), Brendan (Kayla), Erin (Murray Magill), Stuart and Adam Shuplak, Derek Maki and Emma, Quinn and Claudia MacDonald of Sooke, BC as well as great-children Brayden and Olivia Frost, Charlotte and James Hardick. She is also survived by her sisters Karen (Robert) Davis and Marlane Allan (John) of Ladysmith, BC; brother Frederick (Cathy) Oliver of Toronto and sister-in-law Isobel Oliver as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

She was predeceased by beloved husband, Robert “Bob”; her parents Olivia Oliver Tennant and James Oliver; her in-laws Charles and Una Hardick; sister Marilyn (Wayne) Lemcke, brother James Oliver and sister-in-law Vera (George) Kearney.

A private family graveside service for Arlene will take place at a later date in Mountainview Cemetery. Should friends so desire, donations made in her memory to First-Wesley United Church or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James.
