Obituary for Mrs. Mary Zabiaka

Mrs. Mary  Zabiaka
Mrs. Mary Zabiaka, age 100 years, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, February 27, 2015 with her granddaughter Susie by her side.

Mary was born on December 24, 1914 in Boston, Massachusetts and came to Canada with her family as a young girl in 1917. Growing up in Drumheller, Alberta, she worked on the family farm and later at the town's confectionery. She married Walter Zabiaka on May 5, 1935 and they moved to Port Arthur in 1940. Mary gave birth to identical twin daughters in 1942. She worked in Co-op stores, Mount McKay Feed Company and retired from the House of Fashion.

Mary was a proud member of the Agate Rebekah Lodge, Agate Social Club, Westfort Women's Institute and Golden Ages Bowling Club.

In her leisure time, Mary enjoyed dancing, bowling and curling. She also enjoyed being part of a sewing/knitting bee with her longtime friends. Spending time with family was most important to her, especially beating her grandchildren at a card came called “Frustration.” She also loved making perogies and cabbage rolls, borscht and Easter paska for them.

Mary is survived by her twin daughters, Darlene Celko (Peter) and Doreen Holowaty; grandchildren Randy Celko (Fern), Karen Holowaty, William Holowaty (Cindy) and Susie Ostrowski (Paul) and great-grandchildren Katherine, Stephen and Violet.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter as well as her parents, sisters Ann and Vera and son-in-law Bill.

Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Mary Zabiaka will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 10:30AM in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James. Interment will follow in Mountainview Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening from 7:00PM until 9:00PM in the Chapel.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Mary to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
