Obituary for Mrs. Hilda Marjorie Yurick

Mrs. Hilda Marjorie Yurick
After a full life of 100 years and five months, Marjorie Yurick (née Holley) passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2014 in Stonewall, Manitoba, with family at her side.

Marj was born on February 9,1914 in Fort William to Frank and Florence Holley. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Donald (1996) whom she married in 1941, son Ron in 2011 and brother Philip Holley. Her memory will be cherished by her sons Doug and wife Jocelyn of Ottawa and Ken and wife Cathy of Stonewall, and by her grandchildren Jennifer, Lindsay (Carter McLean) and Scott (Kaitlyn, and son Easton), of Winnipeg and Stonewall. Nephews and a niece also survive in California and British Columbia, with their families.

Marj graduated from Fort William Collegiate Institute where she was a member of city champion athletic teams and went onward to Normal School in North Bay to obtain her teaching certificate. Some years later she earned a BA at Lakehead University. In addition to her family life at home in Rosslyn Village, Marj had a very fulfilling career as a primary school teacher, beginning in rural one-room schools in the 1930’s and ending in 1974 after several years as a teacher and then principal at Vickers Heights Public School. It was a career that she loved and numerous students still fondly recall Marj’s teaching and guidance. She was a life member of the Rosslyn Women’s Institute and attended Fort William Baptist Church except during her child-rearing years when she attended Pinegrove United Church. The family travelled and camped often with a succession of travel trailers, and Marj and Don spent many happy retirement summers in their RV in Grand Marais, MN. She continued to do so for some years after Don passed away in 1996. She also enjoyed trips to Hawaii with her brother, and to Yukon and Alaska with a friend after Don’s passing.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for the numerous kindnesses extended by Marj’s friends and neighbours over the years, and to the wonderful caregivers at Glacier Ridge Retirement Residence in Thunder Bay during 2004-2008, and most recently, Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall, Manitoba where Marj resided the last five years.

A celebration of Marj Yurick’s life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3rd, 2014 in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street in Thunder Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in memory of Marj may be made to the Rosslyn Women’s Institute, c/o Ms. Arlene Vibert, R.R. 5, Rosslyn Road, Rosslyn, ON P7K 0P8, or to a charity of your choice.
