Obituary for Mrs. Margaret Ure

Mrs. Margaret Ure
The Family of Margaret (Jones) Ure sadly announces her death, on Friday, February 22, 2008, with family by her side.

Margaret was a gracious lady who had celebrated her 102 birthday on January 17, 2008. Margaret was born in England and arrived in Canada on Sept 30, 1909, with her mother Fanny Jones and brother David. They traveled on to be reunited as a family with William (Bill) Jones, who had immigrated to Port Arthur a year earlier.

That was not Margaret’s only sea journey, she returned to England for a visit in 1939. When she was ready to return to Canada traveling by sea became very dangerous, because of the war. She was informed that she could not tell anyone which port she was leaving from and at what time. Her passenger ship had to be escorted away from port and out to sea, for security reasons. Margaret later traveled to many countries. She particularly liked her winters in Texas with her husband Dave and later to the warmer climate of Portugal. The last time Margaret went to Portugal she was in her early nineties. She truly had a love for traveling. Margaret was a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America. Another of her pleasant memories was having been a “number please girl”, with both Fort William Telephone Co and Bell Canada where she became a supervisor.

Adding to her accomplishments was being a life member of Argyle Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star #10, and was Past District Deputy Grand Matron.

Margaret kept active by participating in many activities, one being, arranging a monthly bus trip to Grand Portage Casino, for the residents of Patterson Court. The latest trip was the day before she was taken to hospital.

Margaret will be missed by her many friends and family. Many referred to her as the hat lady. Margaret enjoyed wearing her hats and gloves with the appropriate attire.

She was predeceased by her husband David, father William Jones and her mother’s Fanny and Ethel Jones. Her brothers: Dave Jones, Ted Jones, Albion Jones and infant sister Flora Mae.

She is survived by one sister Ethel Fraser, nieces: Betty Sproull, Don Mills On.; Marion McCreadie Murillo; In Thunder Bay: Linda Bates; Marilyn Bates; Carol Cuff; Alyce Knot; Deborah Broll; Lorie Dolphin, White Rock; Lynn McCreadie, (en route) Edmonton; nephews in Thunder Bay: David Jones; Brian Bates; Bill Bates. As well as, nieces and nephews children and numerous extended relatives, both in Thunder Bay and across Canada.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Margaret (Jones) Ure will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM at First Church United with Rev. Kent Gibbons and Rev. Ken Moffatt officiating. Internment to follow in Mountainview Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening after 6:00 PM in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 Gore St. West at James. In lieu of flowers, donations to your favourite charity would be appreciated.
