Obituary for Mrs. Marie Campbell (Sande)

Marie Campbell

Marie Campbell, age 102, of Thunder Bay, died peacefully on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Hogarth-Riverview Manor. She was born on October 30, 1915 in Clan William, Manitoba.

As a girl on the family farm, Marie was at her mom's side, helping care for the younger children, as well as pitching in with the chores of the dairy, sawmill and market garden.

While home on vacation from her job at the Mathie Farms near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan, she met Pte. Gordon Campbell of The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, who was on furlough; they married in January, 1941. In September of that year, Marie contracted polio and spent months convalescing at the King George Isolation Hospital in Winnipeg.

Marie and Gordon settled in Westfort. While raising her family, Marie put the skills she'd learned as a 'big sister' to use by volunteering for leadership roles in the Girl Guides, Westfort Community Centre Council, Fort William Women's Institute, Rebecca Lodge, C.G.I.T. Duncan Memorial Junior Church Camp at Loon Lake and the United Church Women. In addition, Marie was a retail clerk for the Zellers, Chapples and Eaton's Department Stores.

A life-long lover of music and self-taught pianist, she and Gordon, an old-time fiddler, entertained in all of the seniors' homes about the city for 37 years.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 2007, her parents MaryAnn and Henry Sande of Bowsman, Manitoba, sisters Bertha Iverson, Mabel Sande, Ann Truhn, Irene Galarneau, Myrtle Holyk and Emily Sagnes, brothers Krist, Norman, Herman, Herbert and William Sande, and great-great-granddaughter Violet Lambert.

Surviving Marie are her children Doreen Green (Jack) and Glen Campbell (Peggy), grandchildren Paul, Heather, Colin and Christopher Campbell, Jeanette Ratz, Wendy Ratz, Jennifer Kukkee, Anders and Stuart Green, great-grandchildren Vernon, Gabriel and Malcolm Green, Roslynn Manduca, Alexander and Anna Ratz, Brittany, Daniel, Raelynn and Braeden Campbell, great-great grandchildren Luna and Salem James Campbell and Karl Manduca as well as sisters-in-law Mary Sande and Gwendolyn Campbell.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Hogarth Riverview Manor for their dedicated care and the comfort you provided to Mom. It will never be forgotten.

Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Marie Campbell will be held in the Spring time with details to be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
