Mr. Nicholas Petrus "Nick" van Schie
Mr. Nicholas Peter Anthony van Schie, age 76 years, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with his family by his side.
Nick was born on September 9, 1941 in Pijnacker, Holland. He came to Canada as a young man of 12. In 1963, he met and married Diane Syrjanen, they were 3 weeks shy of celebrating 54 years together. He started his working life early, spending most of it at A & P Food Stores as a meat cutter/manager, retiring at age 61. In earlier years, with his young family, he loved camping, fishing, snowmobiling, following the stock car racing circuit, and Nascar. He also loved travelling and beer, and living at Trout Lake for 16 years. He loved his church and was very faithful to it, attending every Sunday. His last 15 months were spent at Bethammi Nursing Home, keeping staff on their toes and where he received excellent care.
He was a loving husband, father, Opa, brother and uncle. Nick was the youngest of 12 children.
Nick will be dearly missed by wife Diana, daughters Susan Nowosad (Paul), Joan Gillespie (Ken), sons Joe (Tammy), Nick (Diane), grandchildren Darian (Walker), Joshua and Joey, Matthew, great grandson Tyler. Also survived by brothers Frank (Mary) in Welland, ON, Cor (Betty) in Meaford ON,
Hank (Carol) in Thunder Bay, sisters Coby (Peter) in London ON, Annie (Francis) in Australia, also numerous nieces and nephews in Thunder Bay, eastern Ontario, Holland and Australia and in-laws on the Syrjanen side.
Predeceased by his parents, a brother and 3 sisters in Holland, sister Connie and husband Ted Overmeer and brother Albert and wife Millie in Thunder Bay.
Funeral services for the late Mr. Nicholas van Schie will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 with family and friends assembling at Corpus Christi R.C. Church for Funeral Mass at 10:00 am celebrated by Father Victor DeGagne. A private graveside service will take place in St. Andrews Cemetery.
