Obituary for Mr. Giovanni Mancuso

GIOVANNI MANCUSO
August 28, 1937 – August 5, 2017

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father and Nonno, Giovanni Mancuso at the age of 79 years. Giovanni fought a courageous 9 year battle with cancer and endured a difficult final couple of months. God knew he was tired and called him home on Saturday, August 5, 2017 with his sons by his side, just the way he wanted.

Giovanni was born on August 28, 1937 to Antonio and Nicolanna (nee Rossi) in the town of Carlopoli, Province of Catanzaro, Italy. Growing up he worked as an apprentice shoe repairman and then moved to northern Italy, working alongside his brother as a bricklayer.

In 1971 Giovanni moved to Canada, settling in Nipigon, Ontario, where his soon to be wife, Angelina Cimino had arrived two years prior. Giovanni and Angelina were married in 1971. They went on to have three boys, who he loved tremendously. He began his employment soon after his arrival in Canada with Multiply Plywood Mill, retiring in 2002. Giovanni was a hard worker and helped his sons with each of their endeavours. He never shied away from hard work or preparing a meal for his family. Giovanni had to endure the loss of his wife, our mother, at an early age, and was handed over the reigns of being a single parent for which we were truly blessed for his patience and support.

Giovanni was a devoted father and family man, maintaining contact with numerous relatives in Italy whom he had the pleasure of visiting through the years, travelling often to his home land. He loved a simple life, going for walks with his dog Sable and gardening daily. He also enjoyed cooking and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a blueberry and mushroom picker extraordinaire, he also loved making homemade wine and sauce. He found great joy in telling stories of his life growing up and as a young man in Italy and always enjoyed sharing Calabrese Proverbs. He liked to sneak treats to his grandchildren and play Italian Cards with his sons.

Giovanni is survived by his three sons, Tony, Roberto (Giovanna) and Leo Mancuso; and two grandchildren, Angelina and Alessio whom he loved and adored. Also surviving is his devoted brother, Giuseppe Mancuso (Giovanna Montella), who looked up to Giovanni with tremendous adoration and cousin Giuseppina Scalzo, who was more like a sister to him. Numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives living throughout Italy also survive.

He was predeceased by his wife, Angelina; his parents; sister Tonina Talarico; nephew Angelo Talarico and half brother Salvatore Mancuso.

Funeral Services for the late Mr. Giovanni Mancuso will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 with family and friends gathering in St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 10:30am celebrated by Fr. Luigi Filippini. Entombment will follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum, St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma after 6:00pm, with the vigil prayers offered at 7:00pm in the chapel.

Should friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
