Obituary for Mr. Edward Mitchell

Edward M. Mitchell
February 09, 1928 – May 11, 2017

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a devoted father and husband. Ed passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Thunder Bay at the St. Joseph’s Heritage Bethammi Nursing Home at the age of 89.

Ed was an avid outdoorsman, he found his serenity in the bush. He lived for hunting, fishing, camping and berry-picking. Every chance he had he enjoyed the outdoors. If you were looking for him on the weekend he was probably down some old dirt road sitting on a big rock fishing or waiting for that big moose to come around the bend. Dad always put his family first, he lived for them. There was nothing he would not do for us, his love was unconditional.

At a very early age he started working in the bush as a bucksaw cutter/piecework, later operating equipment and some road construction. Dad worked for numerous Woodlands Operations through-out his career. After many years of woodlands experience he was promoted to Camp Foreman and then Supervisor for Camp 86 Spruce Falls, Kapuskasing, later transferred to Longlac, ON Kimberly-Clark Woodlands Camp 61 and then Camp 68 Nakina, ON. He retired with Kimberly-Clark Woodlands at the age of 65.

Ed is survived by his second wife Marlene Person Mitchell, daughters Florence Mitchell Taillefer (Mike), Phyllis Poirier (Réjean), Edna Mitchell (Glenn Toman) and son-in-law Andreas Hanover (Teena), step-daughters Pamela Kean (Mark), Darcalene Kopp (Ken) and Kristine Maksymiw (Ray). Brothers Donald Mitchell Lethbridge, Alberta and Robert Mitchell (Karen) Chase, B.C. Brothers-in-law Peter Langlois, Bob Person (Simone) and sister-in-law Darlene Buchamer. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife Marian Mitchell, daughter Lorraine Hanover, grandson Christopher Edward Weston; parents Walter and Dorothy Mitchell, siblings Wilfred, Arthur, Eva and Ruth.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial service will take place on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 1:00 pm in Lakeview Presbyterian Church, 278 Camelot Street, Thunder Bay with Rev. Harold Hunt officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.

Donations can be made in memory of Edward Mitchell to St. Joseph’s Heritage Bethammi Nursing Home, 63 Carrie Street, Thunder Bay, ON P7A 4J2 or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
